Rough cut 3

This is our third rough cut, we have made slight tweaks to it in final cut to make it look better. All we need to add for it to be our final cut is an intro that shows the band name and song and also we might include the company logo.

Digipak

This is our final digipak, we have tried to make it looks as DIY as possible to make it fit with the conventions of punk rock. We have the band photo and punk rock bands normally focus on the band rather that one individual. We have the bassist going to smash his bass on the front cover as anger and aggression are two factors which come into play in punk rock. We have the band logo on the CD as we felt it might not fit into the rest of the album but we thought it would look good and fit onto the Cd quite well. We used brick walls quite a lot through this as it fits with the run down theme that we had running through our music video. The font looks like graffiti as that also fits into punk rock DIY conventions.

Magazine advert

This is our magazine advert for our album. We have made it have a very DIY look to fit with the punk rock conventions. We might make tweaks to this in time but at the moment we feel like it is a finished product.

Photo shoot

These are the photos we got for our photo shoot. We took them in different areas but they all followed the same run down theme that we decided on and appeared in our music video. We purposely made the pictures look purposely minimalistic in order to fit with the DIY concept of punk rock.

Chosen photos
Some of these pictures have been cropped and edited to give it a better look.

Digipak plan 2

I decided to make another plan/rough version of our digipak in photoshop. I used a digipak template so it looks more professional. I decided to add better pictures instead of hand drawn ones so it was easier to identify what me and Ian wanted to do with the digipak. We have left the back pretty blank because we do not know the song listings we are having for our album as of yet, we also don't know what copyright information needs to be added onto our album yet but we will find out.

Photo shoot visual representation

This is a representation of what we want our photo shoot to look like. We used copyright free pictures to represent the members of the band. We have made this just s owe know how we want the photo shoot to look, even though it might change and we might not follow this.
This is another idea we have for our photo shoot. We want a picture of the band playing as well as the band looking more casual and against a wall. This would fit with conventions of punk rock to see the band playing. We might have this picture more casual than the video just to show that the band has fun while playing.

Rough cut 2

This is our second rough cut. We have added different editing techniques into it. We have sharpened up the transitions, added filters to the video so we can get the right lighting effect. We made the video get gradually darker so we could represent the mood, which is gradually getting darker.

Interesting music videos

Initial ideas

These are our initial ideas for our music video. We are hoping to stick to most of these ideas while making our videos but we understand that our ideas might evolve and change into something else.

Advert Plan

This is the plan for our advert. We have decided to make it look DIY so that it fits in with the punk ethic we are going for, we have done this through having pictures on which look slightly uneven. We aim to keep to this plan but we understand that it might change and evolve into something else.

Photo shoot ideas

We have come up with some initial ideas for our Photo shoot. It will be set in a run down area, possibly some graffiti and the band against the wall and on top of it. We are aware that The Ramones had an album cover similar to this but we are trying to stay as far aware for that design as possible as we have no intention to plagiarise. The band will be waring slightly messy looking clothes, with some members sitting on the floor standing up or being on the wall itself. We plan on taking photos in several different places and pick the best one that fits the design and feel that we are going for, making sure that it can relate to both the band logo and the band name. This shot will be very minimalist and will have a limited number of props, if any. The image shown below is an example of the kind of setting we are looking for.

Another idea that we are thinking about is doing a second photo shoot in the studio at college. This is because we will have full access to the lights and possibly the green screen, to add what ever background we choose. In this shoot the guitars will be used as props in the photo so that it looks like the band are having a practice session, therefore going with the DIY concept of Punk rock.

Digipak plan

This is the plan for our digipak, we have made sure to include all of the panels as to make it as realistic as possible. The drawings aren't very good but obviously that will improve with real life photos instead of hand drawings. We have writing in the places where there needs to be a lot of writing or in a place where we don't know what we are putting in right now.

Rough cut

This is our first rough cut for our music video. It is for the song 'Brain Stew' by the band 'Green day'. We have made sure to make all the video clips in the correct order. We have left out a lot f editing techniques and filter etc that we intend on putting in the final cut of our music video. We used final cut to edit this rough cut together and to make adjustments. The skills that we have learned from fist year and the transitional period have helped us in making this video.

Album moodboard

This is a moodboard for album covers that are in our genre, wich is punk rock/rock. These will give is some ideas and inspiration for our own album cover. We will not plagiarise these album covers though as they only serve as inspiration. They also give us ideas of conventions of punk albums which makes it easy to make a digipak within the genre.

Key media concepts/ theories

These are the key concepts that we will use in A2 media studies. I will try and use these concepts when I can to make my media production as good as possible. These theories serve as the backbone for all pieces of media that are made.

Personal skills audit

This is my personal skills audit. It shows what skills I have learned and how they have helped me in media studies. It also shows how these skills will help me during A2 when I am making a music video.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our music video, we hope to follow most of these but we know that as we progress, some shots might be changed and edited or even removed altogether.

What is genre?

Genre is a system of classification that different forms of entertainment fit into. This includes book, film, music. It makes it easy to find other films/books/music you will like as things within a certain genres will be similar. Things are put into genre by what conventions they follow. Genres of music include, rock, pop, rap, dance etc. All of these genres contain different conventions which set them apart. For example, in a pop video you would expect to see bright colours and simple lyrics but with a rock song you would expect to here heavy guitars.

Budget

Shooting schedule

We will use the shooting schedule when film so that we can remind ourselves of what kind of  shot we need and how the actors are supposed to act inside the shot and also mise en scene. Without this we would be forced to improvise and the product would not look good and look like we have made it up on the spot. The illustrations in our storyboard are poor so we would rather rely on words than pictures.

Questionnaire results

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ChWcQJuxmCM4lmkt4rMX4TuheiI61IfveSzLWvHIdSU/viewform

This is a link to our questionnaire for our music video. We only got a limited number of responses so the results have to not be taken as seriously as a questionnaire with a lot of responses.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ChWcQJuxmCM4lmkt4rMX4TuheiI61IfveSzLWvHIdSU/viewanalytics

This shows an analysis of the questionnaire. You can see that the people who filled out this survey believe that live performance is not important within a music video but we have gone against this as we have included this in our music video. It shows that having a narrative tell a story is important and we have done this in our music video. It also shows that star image is not important to these people and we have not gone out of our way to do this.

I asked on twitter for people to do this questionnaire but only 2 people did.

Record company logo

In addition to the image, we used this style of font as it looks hand drawn and slightly amateurish as well.

Choosing the Actors

Me and Ian were tasked with the job of choosing actors for our music video as we are the directors. We think we have done a good job picking the actors and think they will do quite well in our video.

Equipment list

This is a list of the equipment we need for our music video, without this equipment our music video would be impossible to do.

Call sheets

Now that we have decided the locations and settings of our video we needed to create call sheets. In the first scene we will be in the TV studio. This is where the band will be shown playing and the room will be dimly lit and have messy decor.

This is the second setting of the video. It is set in the bedroom of the main character and it shows his angst and frustration. This will lead out to the back yard and starts off the narrative of the video.

This wil be the third setting of our video. It is in the industrial estate that me and Ian both live near and provides the correct feel for the video as it is messy and poorly kept.

Props list

This is the props list for our music video. All the props fit with the conventions of a rock/punk video as they always have instruments and do a live performance within their videos. The bin prop fits in with the narrative of the music video as it will be thrown of a wall.

Risk assessment

As directors, me and Ian are both responsible for all of these risks. We have identified these risks as the most possible to occur while filming. We have tried to come up with strategies to overcome these risks as best we can. If we do not overcome these risks we are at risk of ruining our chances of having a successful music video. Other risks could occur that we haven't panned for but we will try and overcome them as they happen.

Animatic - Brain stew

This is the animatic for the song Brain Stew. It shows all the different shots and how they fit with the music and the timing of it. This helped us visualise the shots and we have to film and will make it easier when it comes to filming.

Shot list

This is a list of all the shots that are used in our storyboard for the music video we are to create for the song Brain Stew by the band Green Day. We have a decent variety of shot and angles but as we continue in out project it can be tweaked and improved until we are satisfied with it.

Music video analysis (YMCA)

I did an analysis of the music video for the song 'YMCA' by the Village People. I used, mise en scene, camera, editing and sound to analise the narrative of the music video.

Single cover analysis

This is the single cover analysis of the single 'Longview.' We used this single cover as it is the single for the music video we analysed. Within this the themes of the music video are linked in to analysis of the single cover. In this document, the composition is discussed as well as what images on the single can imply.

Digipak analysis

This is a digipak analysis of the Green day album 'Bullet in a Bible.' Within this, typography, colour, layout and images will be analyzed to get in depth analysis of the meanings and thmese of the digpak.

Longview music video analysis

This is a analysis of Green day's music video 'Longview.' We used this song as it fit into the genre we decided to do, Punk Rock. We both knew of the video and thought it would be a good idea to do an analysis of it as it has some interesting themes.

Pixel man

This is a pixel version of Osama Bin Laden. I found this task quite simple but it was quite time consuming. If I was to change something I would make the colours less blocky and make it look more realistic. A good thing about it is that it looks like who it is supposed to and is very recognisable as Osama Bin Laden.

Julian Opie Portrait

I made an opie portrait which was inspired by Blur's greatest hits album cover.
Evaluation
I found this task quite easy which was surprising as I've never used Photoshop properly before. I followed the tutorial which was a big help. I had made some mistakes with the layers but I looked over the tutorial and this helped me sort it out. I would have liked to improve the features on my face as they don't look very professional or realistic.

Andrew Goodman 'Dancing in The Distraction Factory' Theory

To be awarded level 4 for your research and planning you must show evidence ofdetailed research into music videos of a similar genre. Below is a guide to how to analyse music video based on Andrew Goodwin's 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (1992).

Goodwin identified 6 typical characteristics of a music video:

In His Book Dancing in the Distraction Factory Andrew Goodwin points out characteristics and features that can be found in music videos. Looking at a selection of music videos which can be recognised

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Using Goodwin's ideas choose a music video of a similar genre to your and write a detailed analysis addressing the 6 features as outlined by Goodwin. Don't forget to include discussion of the technical aspects as well such as mise en scene, camera movement, position, angle and composition as well as editing techniques used.

Purpose of a music video

The purpose of a music video is too tell the story or narrative of a song. To create a star image which makes the musician recognisable and makes them into an idol. To make more money by showing the music video on television and on the internet, making more people buy the song.

Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with:

• a digipak for the album’s release;
• a magazine advertisement for the digipak.
